Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies articulately. By end of Grade 2, be able to solve addition and subtraction problems from memory.

 

Adding and Subtracting Like Units Practice

1. How many ways can you make 20? Use picture models of addition and subtraction equations.

 

2. How many stars do you see?

Let’s add some more stars:

Write an addition equation to show how many stars total.

 

3. How many diamonds do you see?

Cross out 3. How many do you see now? 

Now there are ______ diamonds. 

15 - 3 = _______

 

Activity #1

How many total dots are there in the tens frames?

Write two equations to represent the total, use both addition and subtraction.

 

Allow students to complete independently, and then ask a few students to share the equations they wrote. Highlight both addition and subtraction equations. 

 

Activity #2

a. Prior to student activity, print and cut activity cards. Laminate for durability, if desired.

 

b. Students may complete the activity independently or with a partner. Students will choose two cards.  They can decide if they’d like to create an addition or subtraction equation with their cards.  They write each equation and find the total.

 

Adding and Subtracting Like Units Game

a. Materials Needed: Deck of playing cards for each pair of students, paper and pencil for keeping track of their work.

 

b. Students will play this game in partners.  One student takes a turn by pulling two cards.  Their goal is to get as close to 10 as possible.  They can either add or subtract the two numbers to try and get close to 10. 

 

c. Students find the difference between their total and 10, and that this is their score for the round.  Whichever student has the lowest score, wins the game!
