Identifying Coins (1.NBT.A.1)
8-1 Identifying Coins (1.NBT.A.1)
Let’s talk coins! Many students at the primary level have seen and interacted with coins, but do they understand their difference in values?
To teach students the difference in coins and their values, show students real or photographs of real coins. If you have real coins on hand, pass them around for students to view. Even though they are all circular in shape, they are different in size and color. Students should know and be able to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
Discuss each coin, its value, and its relation to a dollar. Also discuss what students notice on each coin, and discuss its attributes. Have students repeat the coin names and values after you. Our FREE Coin Posters can be used to help teach this concept, as well as to display as a reference in your class.
Our FREE Coin Mini Books can also be used for students for students to review each coin. Each mini book can be easily assembled by students. No cutting, gluing, or stapling required!
To Assemble Each Mini-Book:
- Download this Book (Click Here)
- Print one per student and distribute. Some of the text will appear upside down at first, but once assembled all pages will be in the right direction.
- Fold horizontally on the line (going lengthwise).
- Fold vertically on the line (in half).
- You now have a mini book!
When introducing a mini book to students, read the book to the class first while they follow along. Discuss any new vocabulary. In these mini books, they also prompt students to count by the value of the coins. Practice this part as a class, so when students read independently they can be successful in counting.
Students can keep their mini books as a reference and can also use them during independent reading time for cross-curricular learning.
