Making Ten to Add within 100
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem
Have the ability to add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. 2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Be able to decompose one and two digit numbers to make 10. Solve word problems using addition and subtraction strategies.
Making Ten to Add within 100 Practice
Let’s Skip Count by 10s!
We can break numbers apart to make 10. It makes it easier to add!
If I break apart 6 into 2 and 4, I can make a 10!
Now Solve the equation:
8 + 6 = _______
Let’s Try it Out!
Circle the objects to make 10.
Now, write an equation to represent the model above:
____________ + ___________ = _____________
Now, Using Numbers!
Directions: Solve the equation by making 10. Draw a model to show you are correct.
26 + 5 = ________
Draw your model.
Activity #1
Directions: Circle the hearts to make 10 in order to figure out how many hearts there are.
How many hearts are there? ___________
Write the equation you made: ___________ + ____________ = ___________
Directions: Circle the stars to make 10 in order to figure out how many stars there are.
How many stars are there? ___________
Write the equation you made: ___________ + ____________ = ___________
Activity #2
Directions: Use your manipulatives to break apart the numbers in your problem to make 10s.
a. Students will complete the activity with a partner. One student will have a problem card, and the other student will have manipulative like counting chips, ones blocks, or uniifix cubes and the activity board.
b. One partner will read the problem on the problem card to the other partner.
c. Together, students will use their choice of manipulative to arrange the addends in the problem into tens and solve the problem.
Making Ten to Add within 100 Game
a. Materials Needed: Number cards, laminated before the lesson, pencil and paper for students to use if needed.
b. Students will play this game in groups of three. One student pulls a card and without looking at it, holds it up to their forehead.
c. The partners discuss together what clue to give. Their clue should help the other student figure out what card they have, based on making 10s. For example, a student might be holding a 4 card. Their partners could say, “If you add 6 more to your number, it will equal 10.” Or “If you add 16 more to your number, is will equal 20.”
d. Students switch so everyone has a chance to pull a card.
