ccss.math.content.2.nbt.b.5 ccss.math.content.2.oa.b.2 subtracting with multiples of 10 and single digit

Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies articulately. By end of Grade 2, be able to know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory.

Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/ or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Subtract multiples of 10 and single digit from two digit numbers. Use a variety of strategies to solve subtraction problems.

Subtracting with Multiples of 10 and Single Digit Practice

Try this out: 67 - 32 = _____

When subtracting, it can be helpful to break numbers apart by tens and ones. You could use base ten blocks like this:

You can also use an open number line to solve this

67 - 32 = _____

First take away by 10s from the total Then 1s

Now try by multiples of 10

Now you try!

88 - 63 = _____

53 - 34= _____

Activity #1

Directions: Skip count by 10s, starting at 5.

What patterns do you see?

Directions: Count by 10s again, this time starting at 2.

Activity #2

a. Prior to student usage, print and cut activity cards. Laminate for durability, if desired. It is recommended to either laminate activity cards, or place them in dry erase slaves for easy re-use.

b. Students may complete the activity independently or with a partner. Students will choose two cards from a stack, and arrange them to create a two digit number of their choice. The partners work together to subtract this number from 100. They write an equation that represents the work they did.

c. Switch so the second student draws two cards.

100 - ____________ = ____________

100 - ____________ = ____________

100 - ____________ = ____________

Subtracting with Multiples of 10 and Single Digit Game

a. Materials Needed: base ten blocks, ones blocks, cup or small container that students can’t see through, pencil, paper

b. Students will play this game in partners. One student puts in tens and ones blocks to build a number unknown to their partner.

c. Partner A asks “How many are left if you took away ____ (multiple of 10)?” Partner B answers. Using this information, Partner A figures out how many are in the cup. If they are correct, they get 1 point.

d. First partner to 5 wins the game!
